War Memorial, The Knowes, Macduff

The War Memorial at The Knowes in Macduff was designed by Henderson and Fowlie in 1920. It is a tall, slender octagonal tower with five stages, standing on a stepped base. The memorial is constructed from tooled grey granite, featuring a bullfaced lower stage and tooled granite dressings. The lower stage is marked by a cornice and has a keystoned oculus immediately below it on each face. Each face, except for the one with the recessed doorway, displays a polished grey granite plaque inscribed with the names of those who fell in the First and Second World Wars (1914-18 and 1939-45). The first stage has rectangular barred openings to light the internal stair, which are located alternately on the faces, while the second and third stages have randomly sited openings. The top stage is deep and crenellated, defined by a blocked cornice and features a blind crosslet on each face.
