Description
Gardner Parish Church, located at 61 Duff Street in Macduff, was designed by A. Marshall Mackenzie and completed in 1899. This rectangular church is built on a sloping site over a raised basement, featuring a principal gable and a flanking tower facing Duff Street. The exterior is constructed of dark whinstone, accented by contrasting tooled and polished ashlar dressings.
The west gable is illuminated by a large pointed-headed window with intersecting tracery. The tower, which has three stages, includes a spire that is slightly set back at the southwest corner. At the base of the tower, there is a pointed-headed recessed entrance, which is closed by double-leaf plank doors adorned with ornate cast-iron hinges. Each face of the upper stage of the tower features pointed-headed mullioned and transom windows, and the corbelled wallhead is equipped with angle water spouts. The slender square pyramidal spire is slated and topped with a cast-iron weathervane.
The church has five-bay long elevations and includes an additional gabled porch on the south side facing Clergy Street. The east end is canted, and cross finials adorn the gable apices. The roof is covered with slate.
Inside, the church has a simple galleried layout, with the east end canted and featuring an organ that is fronted by a cusped panelled pulpit. There is a three-sided gallery with a panelled front, and the windows have simple chequered coloured glazing, except for those at the east end, which include some coloured glazing. The interior also contains pine pews and a plank dado.
