Description

Wishart Memorial Church, located at 61 King Street in Dundee, was designed by Thomas Martin Cappon with William Gillespie Lamond as draughtsman between 1899 and 1901. This church is built in a Free Perpendicular style and features a square-section tower, constructed from snecked rubble with red ashlar dressings, and includes some Art Nouveau details.

The gable facing the street has a large perpendicular traceried window set within an ogee hood mould, alongside a mullioned basement window. To the right, there is a round-arched door featuring a carved tympanum and an ogee hood mould. The advanced square-section tower has a slight batter and includes a round-arched entrance adorned with a bas-relief portrait of Wishart in the tympanum, moulded reveals, and ornate attached finials. Above this entrance is a three-light square-headed window. The return elevation has single stair lights, while the belfry stage showcases twin louvred openings beneath continuous hood moulds, with angle gargoyles and finials, topped by a crenellated parapet.

The church has tall sides and a rear that follows the fall of the ground, with a four-storey vestry block projecting to the west and a canted bay at the rear that formerly housed the pulpit and organ. This area features three three-light traceried windows, with those on the east set within battered, skewed gablets. The roof is piended and gabled, covered with slate, and includes a pagoda ventilator and a wrought-iron finial.

The interior of the church is gallaried on two sides and contains fine Edwardian stained glass as well as original leaded glass. Additionally, sinuous Art Nouveau wrought-iron railings line the street.
