Description

15 King Street in Dundee is a symmetrical terrace of eight 3-bay houses, built between 1815 and 1819, likely by architect David Neave. The two-storey and basement structure is made of ashlar stone and features a continuous band course over the ground floor, a cill course at the first floor, and a cornice. The details of houses numbered 5 to 11 are obscured by cement render.

The end pavilions, houses 5, 7, 17, and 19, are slightly advanced and have twin central round-headed doors with fanlights and rusticated ground floors. The first-floor architraves and apron panels are located below the cill course. The central block, comprising houses 9, 11, 13, and 15, has plain masonry with segmental arched fanlights set within pilastered and corniced doorways. Notably, the first-floor windows of house 11 have been lowered through the cill course. House 15 features good stained glass from around 1880 in its doorway, while house 13 has etched glass.

The windows are sash and case style, primarily with late 19th-century 4-pane glazing patterns. House 13 has a later dormer, and the roof is slate with ridge stacks, some of which have been rebuilt in brick. Wrought and cast-iron railings are present, with those for houses 5 and 7 dating back to the mid-Victorian period.

The elevation facing Cowgate shows the rears of houses 5 to 9, which are 3 and 4 storeys high. The ground floor is ashlar with 10 bays, featuring windows with aprons and plain doors, one of which has been altered to a window with pilasters. The cornice is present above, while the upper floors are built of rubble and are not aligned with the street, featuring two projecting bowed bays. House 32, a late 19th-century re-fronting, has three bays and returns to the street front with a quarter-circle bow.
