Description

Wishart Memorial Church, located at 114 and 116 Cowgate in Dundee, was built in 1841. This classical church features a three-storey, five-bay symmetrical design above shops. The facade is made of ashlar, while the sides and rear are constructed from rubble. The ground floor has pilastered and corniced shop fronts, with a central pend that includes wrought-iron gates and cast-iron cartwheel guides. The central section is slightly recessed and contains three tall round-arched window recesses, with an inscription and date in the centre bay. The end bays feature paired narrow arched recesses, and all windows have been reglazed and reduced in size. A cornice and blocking course are present, raised pedimentally over the central three bays.

On the elevation facing St Roque's Lane, the ground floor cornice has been removed. There are two tall arched lights with original glazing behind boarding, and the base of the gable end stack is visible.

The rear elevation is three-storey and built from rubble, retaining its original fenestration. It includes three single central windows and paired side windows on the first and second floors, with arched windows on the second floor, featuring sash and case multi-paned glazing patterns. There are two wall head stacks.

The church has a piended slate roof. Inside, the ground floor has been largely altered, while the first and second floors feature a large galleried church with a U-plan gallery supported by eight cast-iron Corinthian columns. The soffit of the gallery is decorated with good plaster anthemion designs. The well of the gallery has been floored over, and there is a gallery cornice and ventilators, with a flat ceiling above.
