Dundee Foundry, 40 East Dock Street, Dundee

The Dundee Foundry, built in 1870 for Gourlay Brothers and Company, is a significant example of a rare cast iron framed former engineering works. The building was relocated within its original site and reconstructed in 2001. It features an irregular pair of linked two-storey, piend-roofed, rectangular-plan ranges that have been converted into a retail unit. The exterior is finished in harl with contrasting ashlar long and short quoins, and it showcases multi-pane glazing patterns throughout.

The entrance elevation on the south side has a modern glass frontage, while the remaining elevations largely replicate the original design. The west elevation, which was formerly the east elevation, still shows evidence of three tall, broad openings with cast iron lintels, each topped with a decoratively glazed oculus.

Inside, the space was altered in 2001 to accommodate the retail conversion, but it retains much of the original machine shop interior. This includes the cast iron framework, a travelling crane, Hodgekinson beams, cast iron stanchions, and timber roof trusses.
