Description

The Macduff Parish Church, situated on Church Street in Macduff, was originally built in 1805 and remodelled in 1865 by James Matthews of Aberdeen. It is a rectangular building with a three-stage domed tower projecting from the north elevation. Gabled porches were added to the east and west gables in 1865. The exterior is largely harled with extensive use of ashlar in margins and dressings, particularly in the pointed, keystoned lintels above the round-headed windows.

The east and west gables each feature gabled entrance porches. The larger, principal porch on the east side has side doorways and a front gable lit by three narrow round-headed windows, mirroring the fenestration in the gable itself. Three long round-headed windows illuminate the south elevation, and similar paired windows flank the square tower on the north side. All windows have shaped and keystoned lintel detailing, with horizontal glazing; two have stained glass, and one has an additional geometric glazing pattern at the head of the window.

The north tower has a domed leaded roof with a cupola and clock faces at the east and north, installed in 1963. The lower two stages of the tower likely date to the original 1805 construction, featuring cornicing and wide-angle pilasters, surmounted by a square belfry built in 1865 with paired round-headed, louvred windows on each face. Decorative cast-iron apex finials adorn the building, and the roofs are slate.

The interior is a lofty, galleried space. Most of the fittings date to the 1865 remodelling, with the exception of the late 19th century pulpit. A five-sided gallery has a panelled front, and a late 19th century organ is positioned behind a square pulpit, which is approached by a flight of stairs with decorative cast-iron balustrade. Two 20th-century stained glass windows by The Abbey Studios are located in the north wall.

Adjacent to the church, within the burial ground, is a mid-19th century church cottage, originally the beadle’s residence. It's a single-storey, three-bay cottage with harled walls, painted margins, a modern gabled porch masking the centre door, and three-pane glazing in the windows (with two panes in the upper sashes). It has end stacks and a slate roof.

The burial ground itself is enclosed by a high rubble wall, with a main entrance on the east side flanked by tooled granite gatepiers and cast-iron carriage gates. A pedestrian entrance is flanked by similar piers on the north side. The ground contains 19th and 20th century tombstones.
