Description
The War Memorial on the Esplanade in Campbeltown was designed by A N Paterson in 1923. It is a substantial stone tower made of green bull-faced squared and snecked stone, featuring a square plan. The memorial has a battered base and diagonally placed buttresses at each corner, with white marble plaques commemorating those who died in the Second World War added to each buttress. The corners are rounded above the buttresses. Each face of the memorial has green slabs with inscriptions, with the eastern face recessed over a white marble plaque. Above this, there is a bracketed ledge with a tall round-arched recess that contains a contrasting granite stone cross relief. The memorial is topped with a stepped pyramidal design surmounted by a small stone cross.
