Description
The War Memorial in Pierowall, Westray, is an obelisk built in the earlier 20th century. It is made of grey granite with pink granite details. The memorial features a square-plan plinth with a tiered base that includes a rectangular plaque dedicated to the men who died during the Second World War. The central shaft is also square in plan, with faces inscribed with the names of those who died during the First World War. At the corners, there are pink granite columns, and the base and cornice are also made of pink granite. The inscribed shaft has a pedimented section dated 1914 and 1919, with a carved fleur-de-lys detail above, which is inscribed on one face. The shaft rises to a point and is topped with a carved fleur-de-lys. Surrounding the memorial is a three-sided flagstone wall.
