Description

The storehouse at Gill Pier in Westray, built in 1888, is a three-storey, ten-bay rectangular building that was originally used as a fish curing shed. Its exterior features exposed flagstone walls, with some areas showing remnants of slaister pointing, particularly at the rear. The quoins are marked by alternate canted corner stones.

On the northwest elevation, which is the principal facade, the design is nearly symmetrical. It includes two windows on the left, followed by a door, then three windows to the right of the door, another door, and two more windows to the right of the second door, with one window at the far right. There are ten windows on both the first and second floors. A central date stone, dated 1888, is located between the first and second floors, and the doorways are round-headed.

The northeast elevation features a later stone ramp that leads up to a large door inserted on the first floor, with a central window on the second floor. There is a modern lean-to building to the left.

The southeast elevation has windows on the second floor, but a modern lean-to addition obscures the ground and first floors.

On the southwest elevation, there is a truncated first-floor window on the left, which may have been a former hoist door, and a central window on the second floor.

The building has varied glazing, with predominantly six-pane timber windows. There are two sliding timber doors at the principal elevation doorways and a single large sliding timber door on the northeast side. The roof is pitched and covered with slate, featuring coped gable end stacks and ridge stacks, along with numerous circular clay cans.

The interior was not seen in 2000.
