Description
This is a mid-to-late 19th-century traditional cottage located in Rackwick, Westray, with a rear byre and a later 18th or 19th/early 20th-century two-bay extension to the east. Adjacent to the cottage are a byre and barn range to the west. The cottage's walls are constructed with flagstones.
The cottage's south elevation, which is its principal facade, is symmetrical, featuring a central porch and door flanked by windows. The later extension to the east has a door with a window to its right. A door is found in the lean-to byre on the west elevation. A lean-to byre extends along the rear (north) of the original cottage, with a slurry hole and a door in the left return. The east elevation has a single window to the right.
The windows are a mix of glazing patterns, including two-pane, four-pane (with upper panes that open inwards), and a larger four-pane timber sash and case window in the later extension. The doors are timber-boarded. The cottage has a pitched roof with a crude crowstepped gable to the west. Large flagstones form the roof, with glazing panes set within them, alongside a two-pane skylight. There are two coped gable end stacks and a ridge stack (formerly a gable end stack), with circular clay cans.
Inside the original cottage, there is a baffle entrance to the west, a "ben" end (sleeping area) to the east, and central back-to-back box beds. A stove is situated on the west gable wall, facing a box bed recess. The bed has a hinged panel at its base, timber slats, and a shelf above. A timber-panelled door to the left of the bed leads to a cupboard with timber panelling inside. An architrave frames the box bed recess in the ben end. A press is located to the right of the box bed, and timber panelling divides the two rooms. The ceiling in the ben end is timber-panelled, with a fireplace in the east wall and a niche to the right. The east room was not inspected in 2000. The interior is colourful, predominantly cream and turquoise in the west end and yellow, white, and pink in the ben end.
The barn/byre range has an east elevation with a lean-to on the far left, a door to the right, three doors to the barn, and a window on the far right. The south elevation features a lean-to attached to the barn gable, with a central window. The west elevation has a lean-to on the far right, a threshing door to the left in the barn, and a lean-to on the far left with a window and door in its right return. The north elevation is characterized by plain gable walls for both the barn and lean-to. The barn/byre range also has timber boarded doors and a pitched roof with crude crowsteps to the south, featuring an overseamed flagstone roof with some triangular overseamers.
