Description

Trenabie Mill and Lade, located in Pierowall, Westray, was built in 1897 and converted into a house in 2000 by P J Finnigan Architects. This three-storey, rectangular-plan house was originally a mill and features coursed flagstone with alternate canted corner stones at the wheelhouse quoins.

The northeast elevation has a kiln section on the right, which is plain except for a central window on the second floor. The mill section to the left includes two windows on the left side, large double doors in the third bay, and a window to the right. There are two windows on both the first and second floors to the left, a hoist door above the ground floor door, and a centrally placed second-floor window. The far left has a plain elevation of a lean-to wheelhouse.

The southeast elevation presents a plain gable wall with the lean-to wheelhouse extending along its length. The southwest elevation features an advanced kiln section on the left with a central ground floor window and a door to the right, along with a central second-floor window. The mill section is set back to the right and has three ground floor windows, four first floor windows, and two second floor windows. Most of these are modern insertions, except for the former ground floor door on the far right and the first floor window above. There is an opening for the mill lade between the ground and first floors in the far right wheelhouse.

On the northwest elevation, there is a central ground floor window and a central second-floor window, which is a recent addition. Some original timber windows remain, including nine fixed panes with two timber shutters below. Modern glazing replicates the former fenestration pattern. The front elevation has four regularly placed rooflights, while the rear mill section has six. The kiln roof is pitched and glazed, the mill section has a pitched slate roof, and the wheelhouse has a slate lean-to roof.

Inside, the ground floor is flagged while the other floors have timber flooring. The arched, two-storey brick kiln structure is still in place, along with pine joists and columns in the mill section. There is a bridge and pit in the wheelhouse, although the wheel itself is no longer present.

The mill lade features a flagstone wall with a narrow water channel that directs water from a reservoir at the rear of the mill into the wheelhouse, with an access opening within the wall near the house.
