Description
Braehead is a later 19th century, two-storey T-plan house located in Westray, featuring a single-storey linear outbuilding at the rear. The exterior is harled with flagstone.
The south elevation, which is the principal facade, has two bays set back to the left, with a window on the far left and a door to the right, above which is a single first-floor window centered above. To the right, there is an advanced pitched single bay with a central bipartite ground floor window and a single window centered above. The west elevation has a plain gable, while the north elevation features an advanced pitched wing to the left with a plain gable, and a wing set back to the right that has a window (formerly a door) to the left and a narrow first-floor window centered above. The east elevation is symmetrical, with a central advanced chimney-breast and raking shoulders above the eaves. It has large flanking bipartite windows on the ground floor and smaller flanking bipartite first-floor windows.
Additional features include a 2-pane fanlight above the boarded door, 12-pane timber sash and case windows, and 8-pane timber sash and case bipartite windows with timber mullions. The pitched roof is made of Orkney stone, with a coped gable end stack to the west and a coped wallhead stack to the east, as well as an advanced chimney-breast with clay cans. The interior is noted to be from the 20th century.
A low rubble garden wall extends southwards from the east gable, featuring a central opening to the south and one remaining square-plan rubble gatepier. A taller wall extends southwards from the west gable, with a gateway to the north.
The outbuilding has a south elevation with a blocked central door, three regularly placed windows to the right, and four windows to the left, with remnants of a former lean-to structure at the far left. The west elevation is a plain gable, while the north elevation is partially visible with a window to the far right, a lean-to shed to the left, and a modern lean-to shed in the center. The east elevation has a door and two boarded sliding doors. The outbuilding predominantly features 3-pane timber windows and has a gable end stack to the west. Its pitched roof is clad in corrugated asbestos. The interior was not seen in 2000.
