Description
Trenabie Mill and Lade, located in Pierowall, Westray, is likely from the early 18th century, with a crude datestone dated 1722. The building was restored in 1999 and is a single-storey structure, originally with a loft, designed as a bere mill. It features crow-stepped gables and an intact breast-shot waterwheel, constructed from coursed rubble.
On the north elevation, there is a narrow entrance on the outer left, which likely originally led to a gear cupboard around or over the pit wheel, with a loft window above it. To the right of the centre is an entrance with boarded timber, and a window that was formerly an entrance is located to the right. The stone masonry to the left is roughly inscribed with 'T S 1722'.
The south elevation has an entrance to the left of centre and a small boarded window on the outer right.
On the east elevation, there is a cast-iron 8-spoke breast-shot waterwheel positioned parallel to the gable end on the left side. Above it, there is a small window to the left and a smaller opening to the right. The base of a finial is visible at the gable.
The west elevation features a small window on the right at ground floor level and a loft window centred above it in the gable, which has a ball finial.
The mill has fixed single and two-pane windows, and the roof is covered with stone slates, including some rooflights.
Inside, the cast-iron bevel pit-wheel remains intact, and most windows have splayed reveals.
