Description

Brough House is a late 18th and early 19th century laird's house, with a later addition to the west. The building is rectangular in plan, two storeys and an attic, and has crowstepped gables and a near-symmetrical south-facing principal elevation. It is constructed of coursed rubble, with harling on much of the exterior except for the west side.

The south elevation originally had a three-bay block to the right. A later gabled porch is centrally positioned with a window to the front, and to the right return is a panelled timber door. Above this is a window and flanking windows to both the ground and first floors. To the left is a smaller, single-storey three-bay addition with a boarded timber door and rectangular fanlight, and flanking windows.

The north elevation shows the original block to the left. It has two near-central windows to the ground and first floors, and one to the right of the ground floor. A larger window is located to the left of the first floor. A breaking-eaves dormer is positioned on the north gable to the right of centre. A single-storey addition adjoins to the right, with a concrete block tank projecting at the junction. An entrance has a boarded timber door, with two small windows to the left.

The east elevation has two windows to the first floor and attic, and one to the left of the ground floor. The west elevation is the blank gable end of the single-storey addition, with attic windows set back on either side of the gable end of the main block.

Most windows are 12-pane timber sash and case windows, many of which have broken or missing panes. The roof is covered in Caithness slate, with parts now missing. The gablehead stacks have band courses to either side of the main block, with one on the north gable. Round and T-shaped cans are present where exhaust pipes exist.

The interior includes a stone flagged floor in the kitchen to the left of the main entrance. A cast-iron range sits within a timber fireplace surround. A dog-leg staircase features a plain timber balustrade. A large semicircular-plan stone range in the single-storey addition likely served as a water heating area for laundry.

A coursed rubble boundary wall with rubble coping encloses the house on all sides, creating a larger area to the north. Remains of rubble and harled outbuildings are visible around a small enclosed yard to the north of the single-storey addition. A small, square walled garden sits at the northeast corner of the enclosed area, with boundary walls of the same height as the wall enclosing the property.
