Description
The Norden War Memorial was erected in 1920, designed by J Child and Son, to commemorate the First World War, with later additions for the Second World War. It is constructed from Yorkstone.
The memorial takes the form of a rectangular-plan podium, topped by octagonal railings and a memorial monument. The monument is an elongated Latin cross with an octagonal shaft and cross-arms, finished with conical terminal caps. Projecting crockets and recessed plain spandrels are located at the four angles between the shaft and cross-arms. A laurel wreath and a sword in its scabbard decorate the front (south-east) of the cross. The base of the cross stands on a flat octagonal pedestal featuring moulded upper and lower edges, raised on a plinth with an integral border trough and a moulded base. The front panel of the pedestal is inscribed with a dedication to the inhabitants of Norden and those who served in the First World War, detailing their sacrifice for freedom. A smaller stone plaque above the border trough further commemorates those who died in service. Seven panels of the pedestal list the names of 83 individuals from the First World War, organised by the 18 regiments in which they served. The facia of the pedestal base is inscribed with the names of battles and campaigns. A secondary, painted metal plaque affixed to the front panel of the plinth records the names and ranks of the 15 individuals who died in the Second World War (1939–1945). The whole memorial stands on a paved Yorkstone podium, accessed by three steps on each side; the ground levels rising to partially obscure the steps on the south-east and north-west sides, and completely obscure those on the south-west side, leaving the north-east side fully visible. Low iron railings with arrow finials closely enclose the memorial.
