Description
The Church of Saint Paul, built between 1860 and 1861 by G. Shaw, is a Grade II listed building located on Edenfield Road in Rochdale. It is constructed of coursed rubble with a slate roof and features a nave with a central west tower, a south-west porch, a north aisle, a south transept, and a chancel that all share a continuous roof. The nave has four bays, a plinth, weathered buttresses, corbelled eaves, and two-light traceried openings. The porch is distinguished by a steep coped gable with kneelers, diagonal buttresses, and an arched opening. The three-stage tower includes a corner circular stair turret, diagonal weathered buttresses, lancet openings at the bell-stage, and a broach spire. The transept, which serves as a vestry off the two-bay chancel, features cusped tracery and a bellcote, while the aisle has two-light cusped openings. Inside, the nave arcade is chamfered with alternating round and octagonal piers, and the roofs are braced A frames. The east window contains 20th-century stained glass.
