Description
The Church of Saint James, located on Chapel Lane in Heywood, was built in 1789. It is constructed from watershot hammer dressed stone and features a stone slate roof. The church has a rectangular plan with twin west doors and a small vestry attached to the north side. The elevation consists of five bays by two bays, with quoins and semi-circular arched west doors that include a fanlight, keystone, and square cut jambs. There are two tiers of semi-circular headed windows, all with stone surrounds, impost blocks, keystones, timber Y tracery, and leaded glass. The east window has three tall lights and is similarly detailed, featuring stained glass. The roof is pitched and topped with a cross finial. The interior is plain and does not have a gallery.
