Description

The original house at 54 Greenan Road, Newry, Co Down, was built between 1800 and 1819. It has since been demolished and replaced by a modern bungalow. The original house, belonging to George Denver, was recorded on an 1834 Ordnance Survey map and a circa 1835 Valuation book, measuring 63 feet by 17 feet by 6 feet.

According to an early Historic Monuments and Buildings Board (HMBB) survey card, the house was constructed before 1834 and was a two-storey building with harled, colour-washed walls and a slated roof. Windows were double-hung, with some featuring full glazing bars and others with panes divided by single vertical glazing bars. Gabled porches were present at both the front and rear.

The rear elevation, which may have originally overlooked a garden, was three bays wide and two storeys high. The building had cement-rendered chimneys at each end gable and on either side of the central bay. The walls were colour-washed ochre. Each bay contained a 6/3 sliding sash window on the ground floor and a smaller, similar window on the first floor, although the window in the left bay was a 2/2 sash. A single-storey gabled porch abutted the right bay. This porch had a pitched natural slate roof, walls matching the main block, and a plain bargeboard with a turned timber finial. It also had a 6/3 sliding sash window, a small 4/4 sash window on its right cheek, and a door with glazed top panels on its left cheek.

An aerial photograph taken in 1999 reveals a gabled windbreak porch on the left side of the middle bay of the front elevation, with a window on the ground floor and a blank window above. The left and right bays each had a window on both floors, with the first-floor windows diminished in height and having heads at eaves level. The right gable had two small windows at first-floor level. Miscellaneous outbuildings were located in the yard.
