Description

This small house, likely built between 1820 and 1839, represents a rare surviving fragment of the Greenwood Park Estate. It is a single-story, two-bay labourer’s house situated within the garden of 43 Greenan Road. The house is characterized by a hipped roof covered in natural slate, with a tall, centrally-positioned cement-rendered chimney. The walls are of rubble stone, painted and harled in sections, and feature an advanced eaves course. The front of the house has painted plastic rainwater goods, while the rear does not.

The west-facing principal elevation has three openings. The right bay contains a modern door faced with t&g sheeting and incorporating a cast iron lattice panel. To its left is a pair of cast iron framed lattice casement windows set within a timber frame, and on the left bay, an identical single casement window. The left and right gables are blank, although the right gable originally held a single-paned casement window, the lattice of which has now been incorporated into the modern door. The rear elevation is blank but shows evidence of previous window openings in each bay.

The site is enclosed by the remains of a high rubble stone wall that formerly surrounded the entire Greenwood Park Estate. To the right of the house, viewed from the road, are two openings with t&g sheeted doors, one leading to a paved area which may have been a former enclosed yard. According to the current owners, the building served as a gardener's cottage for the Greenwood Park Estate, and a similar cottage further north along Greenan Road was recently demolished. A building is marked on the 1834 Ordnance Survey map.
