Description

This is a single-story, single-bay vernacular house, likely constructed between 1820 and 1839. It is located east of 25 Tamnaharry Hill Road, Newry, County Down, standing isolated within a field. While few such vernacular houses remain, this building has undergone alterations that diminished its original character. It is now of limited architectural or historical interest.

The house has a pitched roof covered with artificial slate, with a rendered skew and a cement-rendered chimney on the right gable. The walls are constructed of coursed granite and Silurian rubble between roughly dressed granite quoins. The front elevation, facing west, has a windbreak porch set to the left, topped with a flat concrete roof featuring a small decorative pediment. To the right of the porch is a window opening containing the remnants of a sliding sash window, with a concrete cill. The left gable features an infilled doorway, which may have been intended for future expansion into a two-bay dwelling. The rear elevation has a single central window opening, featuring a stone lintel and a flush concrete cill, the window timbers having been removed. A brick jamb is visible on the left side of this opening, while the right gable is blank and displays red brickwork associated with the chimney breast.

The house is depicted on the 1834 Ordnance Survey 6-inch map. However, it was not included in the first Valuation of around 1835, suggesting its value was below £5. While it may represent the same building as currently exists, the use of concrete cills and brickwork raises the possibility of a 20th-century rebuild. The house is currently in private ownership and was previously recorded as derelict.
