Description
This is a K6 telephone kiosk, dating from approximately 1940 to 1959. It is located opposite 1 Greenanlough Road, in Ballyholland, Newry, County Down. The kiosk is a standard cast iron construction set on a concrete plinth, and is positioned with its back facing the road. It has a shallow, domed roof with a Crown fascia, and the word ‘TELEPHONE’ is displayed in a serif font (red letters on a white background) on three sides, while the fourth (south) face has ‘TELEPHONE’ in a more modern font (yellow letters on a black background). The kiosk features multi-paned glazed cheeks and door, with a plain back panel facing the road.
This design is a variation of the standard K6 'Jubilee kiosk' which was introduced in 1936 and itself derived from the Giles Gilbert Scott K2 kiosk. It dates from 1955, and includes a slot fascia at the top to accommodate one of two royal crowns. These crowns were cast to commemorate the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, acknowledging her status as both Queen Elizabeth I of England and Queen Elizabeth of Scotland. One crown represented St. Edward's Crown for England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, while the other depicted the Queen's Crown of Scotland. Around 45,000 of these kiosks were installed across the United Kingdom between the mid-1950s and 1967, after which the more modern K8 design became prevalent. The kiosk’s original colour scheme was Post Office red (BS381C-red538), later changed to Poppy red (BS381C-red539) with the introduction of the K8.
