Description

A red telephone kiosk of the K6 design by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, located beside the Downshire Arms Hotel at the south end of Newry Street in Banbridge town centre. The kiosk dates from between 1935 and 1953.

The telephone box is constructed of cast iron painted red, with largely replacement glazing and a blank rear panel. The door opens to the north and is fitted with an oval metal handle. Each elevation displays the symbolic Tudor Crown motif positioned above a glazed "TELEPHONE" sign. The interior contains a modern telephone installation.

The K6 design represents a simplified version of Scott's earlier K2 model, introduced to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of King George V. It reflects the art deco and stripped classicism aesthetic of the 1930s. The design was rolled out across the United Kingdom and represents an increasingly rare example of an iconic twentieth-century design. Once commonplace in towns and villages throughout the UK, red telephone boxes are now seldom seen following the cessation of production in the 1980s.

The kiosk was listed in 1987 and has been moved slightly since then, now positioned towards the back of the pavement and slightly to the south of its original location. Following the extension of the Downshire Arms Hotel around 2000, the kiosk is now sited in front of the new extension. The box first appears on Ordnance Survey map editions dating from the 1960s and 1970s.
