Description

A traditional British K6-type telephone kiosk, designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and installed between 1935 and 1953. Located on Main Street in Cushendun, to the north of the Glendun River, adjacent to the village square and the post office.

The kiosk is constructed of cast iron painted in currant red (as defined by British Standard BS 381C-539). Much of the original glazing has been replaced, though the cast-iron body retains its essential character. The blank rear elevation is typical of the K6 design. Each principal elevation displays a prominent Tudor Crown motif above the word "TELEPHONE", representing the British government.

The interior remains largely intact, with the exception of a modern BT telephone installation. The roof design is based upon the top of Sir John Soane's Mausoleum in St. Pancras Old Church, London.

The K6 was the first telephone kiosk type to be widely produced, commissioned in 1935 to mark the Silver Jubilee of King George V. This particular example was erected before 1953, as it retains the Tudor Crown motif. Following the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, a design modification introduced St. Edward's crown as the standard motif, which this kiosk possesses. From 1955, a slot in the fascia allowed either St. Edward's crown or the Crown of Scotland to be inserted in kiosks manufactured from that date onwards.

The kiosk represents a rare survival of a British cultural icon. The K6 design ceased production in 1985, and the number of such boxes throughout the United Kingdom has declined significantly in recent years. It stands prominently within the village conservation area and was listed in 1988.
