Telephone kiosk, outside the Post Office, 15-19 Main Street, Randalstown, Antrim, Co Antrim

This is a pre-Second World War telephone kiosk of K6 type, designed by the influential English architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. The kiosk was first introduced across the United Kingdom in 1936, although the precise date of its installation in Randalstown is unknown. The building is constructed of cast iron, featuring small-paned sides and door, and a shallow domical roof. It stands on the pavement outside the post office in the main street of Randalstown. The kiosk is an example of the ‘Jubilee’ telephone kiosk, originally designed in 1935. It is now comparatively rare due to being largely replaced by later models. The kiosk is within a conservation area and retains its original use as a telephone kiosk. Architectural interest is noted for its style, proportions, ornamentation, and plan form. Historical interest arises from its rarity, the authorship of Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, its local significance, and its social, cultural, and economic importance.
