Description

The White House is a three-storey building located in Randalstown, County Antrim, and is believed to have been constructed between 1880 and 1899. It first appears on the Ordnance Survey map of 1903, suggesting a late Victorian period of origin. The building is finished in stucco and stands within a terrace of houses and shops facing directly onto the pavement, within the town’s built-up area.

The main entrance faces west. The roof is covered in regular courses of Bangor blue slates and features three chimneys rendered with projecting cornices and modern pots. The upper floors have walls of horizontally channelled, smooth, white-painted render, with smooth render also to the canted bays, which include moulded panels at both upper and lower levels. A raised, smooth, rendered and painted shield, bearing the words “The White House” in raised lettering, is positioned in the centre of the first floor. External features include a PVC gutter and downpipe, and modern rectangular timber windows with top-hung vents. Two windows on the first floor of the main wall and a single window on the centre of the second floor have moulded labels above them. The ground floor features fluted timber pilasters at each end and centrally, alongside an angled panelled timber frieze and two wide, modern shopfronts incorporating rolling steel shutters. The rear elevation has a similar slated roof and modern windows, consisting of fixed lights with top-hung vents and side-hung casements. The rear walls are rendered with a dry dash of white stone chippings. The building is privately owned and situated within a conservation area.
