Description

50-52 Harbour Road, Carnlough, Ballymena, Co Antrim

A two-storey, three-bay house with rendered walls and slated roof, forming part of a terrace of six houses. The building includes a shop-front to the ground floor and faces east onto the street with a direct view across the main road to the harbour.

The main front elevation features a roof of Bangor blue slates laid in regular courses, with two chimneys set at the extremities. The walls are smooth rendered, lined and blocked, with raised quoins to the left-hand side. First-floor windows are modern rectangular timber fixed lights with top-hung vents, set in plain reveals with projecting cills. The ground floor contains, from left to right: a window matching the first floor; a rectangular timber panelled door with a plain rectangular fanlight; and a shop-front comprising a pair of large timber fixed lights with double glazing in recessed cills flanking a modern glazed timber door, all set in plain reveals. Above the shop-front is a projecting canted panel intended as a ground for a shop sign, though none is currently fixed in position. Cast iron gutters and downpipes service the front elevation.

The rear elevation is similarly finished with Bangor blue slates and smooth rendered chimneys to the ridge extremities. The walls are dry-dashed with pebbles and limestone chippings. Two new flush rooflights have been added, with PVC gutters and downpipes. Three first-floor windows are arranged across the elevation: a central rectangular timber casement with fixed light, flanked by two rectangular timber fixed lights with top-hung vents. The ground floor includes, to the left of a rear projection, a lean-to structure with rendered walls, corrugated iron roof, and a timber double casement window. To the right of the projection is a ground-floor window matching the first-floor pattern above. The projection itself features a timber double door and one similar window to its left.

A concrete yard occupies the rear, containing a two-storey gabled building (not included in the listing) with roof and walls similar to the main house. This rear building has, on its elevation toward the main house, two openings to the first floor closed by ledged doors and two similar doors to the ground floor with a large timber fixed light window between them. Both gables are blank. On its elevation toward High Street, the rear building features one timber sliding sash window to the first floor (vertically hung, with horns and one horizontal glazing bar to each sash) and double ledged garage doors set in a rendered surround to the ground floor. An entrance to the yard, flanked by an entrance to the yard with flush doors and corrugated iron roof, is located to the left-hand side.

The building is known to have appeared on the Ordnance Survey map of 1903, and a photograph taken by 1872 shows it already with a shop-front to part of it. The precise date of construction is not recorded, though it is dated to the period 1860-1879. The building stands within a conservation area in the built-up village of Carnlough, directly facing the street pavement.
