Telephone Kiosk, Harbour Road, Carnlough, Ballymena, Co Antrim

This is a cast-iron K6 type telephone kiosk, located on Harbour Road in Carnlough, Ballymena. Designed in 1935 by the English architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, the kiosk was first introduced across the United Kingdom in 1936. It is an example of a pre-war model, typically superseded by later designs but retained in sensitive or historic locations. The kiosk features small-paned sides and door, glazed with perspex, and a shallow, domed roof inspired by Sir John Soane's mausoleum. It stands in front of a former railway arch on the main street of the village. The kiosk can be dated to between 1940 and 1959, based on the presence of a 'Tudor' crown motif, which was discontinued after the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. The kiosk is within the Carnlough South townland, and is of architectural interest due to its style, proportions, ornamentation, and plan form, as well as its rarity, authorship, and local historical interest. It is owned commercially, and its location is within a conservation area.
