Description
This is a two-storey, three-bay house situated on High Street in Carnlough, Ballymena, built in the mid-19th century, likely between 1840 and 1859. A building is indicated on the site on an Ordnance Survey map from 1832, but the current structure probably dates from the mid-19th century or later. The house stands within the built-up area of the village, facing onto High Street.
The house has a gabled slate roof with Bangor blue slates laid in regular courses, the eaves of which rake up slightly on the left-hand side. Tin guttering and a cast iron downpipe are visible on the west-facing entrance elevation. The walls are rendered with a dry-dash finish of pebbles and blackstone and limestone chippings, accented by smooth cement-rendered quoins and a plinth. The ground floor has two windows, and the first floor has three, arranged asymmetrically. The windows are rectangular timber sliding sash windows, with a 1 over 1 configuration and horns, set in smooth cement-rendered surrounds with projecting concrete sills. The entrance doorway contains a modern rectangular panelled door within a similar surround to the windows.
The north elevation displays the gable of the main front block to the right, with the two-storey rear return extending to the left. This section also has a slated roof, rendered walls, smooth cement-rendered borders, a timber barge board along the gable, an eaves board along the return, a metal gutter, and a cast iron downpipe. A PVC soil pipe is also visible. This elevation has four windows, which are sashed as the front windows but lack horns. It features a modern rectangular glazed flush door.
The rear elevation is a two-storey gable, also rendered, with timber bargeboards and a PVC downpipe. The windows on this side are rectangular timber, top-hung single pane, set in surrounds similar to the front. To the rear of the property is a concrete backyard with two steps to account for a change in level, and a lean-to outbuilding with rendered walls and a corrugated iron roof. The boundary walls to the south and east are formed by neighbouring buildings with dry-dash and limestone rubble finishes, respectively. A portion of the side plot is used for car parking. The house is located within a conservation area. It was delisted on June 28, 2002.
