Description
This is a mid-19th-century building which has lost some of its original features and is of no special architectural or historic interest.
A two-storey gabled house with rendered walls and slated roof. The main entrance faces north. On the entrance elevation, the roof is laid with Bangor blue slates in regular courses. The wall is finished with smooth cement rendering with raised quoins to the extremities, a raised plinth, raised platbands, and a projecting eaves course. Cast iron guttering and downpipe are fitted. Windows are rectangular timber sliding sashes, vertically hung with one-over-one glazing and horns, each set in moulded stucco surrounds with a key-block and projecting cill. The doorway contains a rectangular timber four-panel door set in a similar surround.
On the west side elevation, the main structure is a two-storey gable to the left with a lean-to two-storey extension to the right. Both are finished with dry-dashed rendering comprising crushed blackstone and limestone chippings, applied in the mid-1950s. The main gable has a smooth cement-rendered chimney rising to the apex with two terracotta pots, which are not original. The attic contains one small timber casement window, and the first floor has one similar small window. Two ground-floor windows consist of rectangular timber fixed lights with casements; a small timber fixed light is positioned to the left. At the extreme left-hand side stands a small single-storey lean-to store of 20th-century date and poor quality, with smooth rendered and painted walls and a concrete slab roof. It has a ledged door to the right-hand side and a small window opening to the left facing the road, now blocked with wood. The extension to the right of the main gable has one first-floor window consisting of a timber fixed light with a top-hung vent and a door below with panelling and translucent glass glazing. A timber fascia follows the roofline; all elements of this extension date to the mid-20th century.
The rear elevation faces south. The roof is laid with Bangor blue slates in regular courses and has red ridge tiles, contained by a cement gable coping to the left. A smooth rendered blank wall encloses a two-storey projection from the back of the original house, extending almost to the rear boundary. A wooden fascia and PVC gutter and downpipe are fitted.
The building stands within the built-up area of the village at the end of a short terrace of three houses, facing a narrow side road with other domestic properties immediately opposite. The front faces directly onto the road. A small grassed garden and concrete area lie to the side of the house. The boundary wall to the road is rubble faced with cement to the road side and cement coping. Rendered gate piers with cement ball finials frame a wooden gate of timber trellis-work on a sturdy frame. A new large-diameter cylindrical electricity pole stands in a corner of the garden.
The building appears on the Ordnance Survey map of 1857, though its precise construction date is not known. It is located within a conservation area and was delisted on 28 June 2002.
