Coastal Road Bridge, Harbour Road, Carnlough, Ballymena, Co Antrim

This is a single-arch masonry bridge spanning the Carnlough River, built in 1847 to the design of County Antrim’s County Surveyor, Charles Lanyon. The bridge is constructed of snecked basalt rubble with dressed sandstone voussoirs, a string course, and copings to the parapets. The segmental arch is skewed on the east face. Its original appearance has been significantly altered by a modern concrete extension added to the east face, which now obscures most of the bridge on that side; the coping on the western side, adjacent to McAuley’s Hotel, is partially concrete, comprising approximately 40% of the section. The bridge is located on the main road through the village, within the built-up area, and abuts adjacent buildings on the western side, limiting visibility from that direction. The bridge is of industrial archaeological interest and is situated within a conservation area. It was delisted on 25 June 2002.
