Description
This is a K6 telephone kiosk situated on the Donaghmore Road, southwest of the Ringclare Road junction. It is an attractive example, externally unaltered and located roadside. The kiosk is constructed of red painted cast-iron, featuring eight glazed margin-paned panels on three sides, with a door facing north. The glazing is currently protected by a plastic sheet. It has a shallow domed roof with a Crown fascia, and the word ‘TELEPHONE’ is displayed in red letters on a white background on all four sides. The rear (south) panel is plain. Approximately 45,000 of these kiosks were installed in Britain by the mid-1950s. This specific kiosk is a standard K6 ‘Jubilee’ design, introduced in 1936 and based on the earlier K2 kiosk designed by Giles Gilbert Scott. Installation continued until the early 1950s. After 1955, a fascia at the top was introduced to display one of two royal crowns commemorating the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. These crowns represented St. Edward's Crown (for England, Wales and Northern Ireland) and the Queen’s Crown of Scotland, acknowledging her role as Queen Elizabeth I of Scotland. The original colour scheme was Post Office red (BS381C-red538), later changed to Poppy red (BS381C-red539) following the introduction of the K8 kiosks. The kiosk was constructed between 1940 and 1959, and currently remains in commercial ownership and use as a telephone kiosk.
