Description
A much altered two-storey, three-bay farmhouse dating from the mid-19th century, prominently sited on the north-west side of McGaffin's corner in Tullymurry.
The building retains its pitched natural slate roof with advanced eaves course and plain timber bargeboard to the gables. There are three rendered and corbelled chimneys – one to each gable end and one between the left and central bays. The walls are finished in modern smooth cement render and painted. All windows are modern uPVC casements with painted stone cills. The principal elevation faces east, with each bay on both floors containing a single window, all equally aligned. The central bay has a modern glazed timber porch set to its left. The left gable has a ground-floor window.
The rear elevation is partly abutted by a modern single-storey return on its left and centre sections. The exposed section of the rear shows a 6/6 sliding sash window at the extreme left on the ground floor, and ground-floor and first-floor windows to the right bay. The modern return has a flat overhanging roof, a timber casement window to its left cheek, a small timber top-hung casement window and glazed timber door to its right cheek, and a blank rear face. The right gable of the main house is blank. Rainwater goods are modern plastic.
The front and left gable are set within a small garden enclosed to the road by a curved garden wall rendered and painted with saddle coping. A wrought-iron loop-headed pedestrian gate with square-section pyramidal coped granite piers provides foot access. At the right end, a pair of round-headed wrought-iron gates on roughly dressed granite piers give vehicle access to the rear yard.
The rear yard contains a two-storey rubble stone outbuilding with a pitched natural slate roof in poor condition and rubble stone walls with tongue-and-groove sheeted doors.
Historical records show a building at this location on the 1834 Ordnance Survey map. The valuation increased substantially from £1 10 shillings in 1862 to £4 10 shillings in the later 1870s, indicating major refurbishment or rebuild during this period. The 1899 valuation entry references a new house at that date, though its assessed value remained unchanged.
The HMBB survey of 1972–1973 documented the house as it then appeared: a two-storey, three-bay rendered dwelling with natural slate roof and three chimneys. It retained 6/6 exposed box sash windows to each bay (those on the first floor of reduced height), a hipped-roof porch with fretted timber fascia and panelled door surmounted by a rectangular fanlight with segmental head, and half-round metal rainwater goods.
The building has undergone substantial alteration and now retains no features of architectural or historic interest.
