Description

Outbuildings at Tullymurry House

These are the outbuildings forming an intact farmyard that contributes significantly to the setting of Tullymurry House and to the group value of the property.

The farmyard is positioned to the rear (north) of the main house and is enclosed on its west and north sides by attractive outbuildings with pitched natural slate roofs, rubble stone walls, and tongue-and-groove sheeted doors. The east side of the yard is bounded by a high stone wall constructed in dashed rubble stone, which features two large square-section gate piers carrying corrugated metal gates that open onto Tullymurry Road. Stone carriage bollards flank either side of these gates. At the southeast corner of the yard stands a high tongue-and-groove sheeted pedestrian gate with a small carriageway beneath a segmental headed archway. A further gateway from the road leads to the north side of the yard; this gate is flat-iron with rounded finials, supported on cylindrical dashed piers. A pedestrian gate in the west side of the yard provides access to the garden. To the rear (north) of the farmyard stands a large modern Dutch barn.

Historical records indicate that a building was shown at this location on the 1834 Ordnance Survey six-inch map, although its alignment does not match the present structure. The farmyard buildings are shown in their present form and identified as 'Tullymurry House' on the 1859 Ordnance Survey map. The valuation records of 1877 document an increase in the property's value from £20 to £23 owing to the erection of new outbuildings at that date. The valuation subsequently fell to £15 in 1892 due to the property's dilapidated state at that time. The buildings are likely of mid-nineteenth-century date, constructed between 1840 and 1859.
