Description

The building at 4 Aughnacavan Road, Newry, was a house likely constructed around 1860, though this is based on valuation records. A building is shown at this location on an Ordnance Survey map from 1834, and again in 1859, although its orientation differs slightly from later maps. The house was referred to as "Vine Cottage" on a 1918 Ordnance Survey map.

According to historical records, the house was destroyed by fire around 1990 and subsequently replaced with the present building. The initial photographic survey from 1972 depicted a one-and-a-half-story, three-bay dwelling with a pitched natural slate roof. Each gable featured rendered and painted chimneys, and the front slope had three gabled dormers with decorative terracotta ridges and plain bargeboards. The front elevation comprised smooth, rendered and painted surfaces with stepped V-channelled stucco quoins and a painted basecourse. The main entrance was centrally located on the ground floor, accessed by two steps leading to a modern door, flanked by three-paned sidelights (the central one larger) with thin-panelled timber pilasters. A semi-elliptical radial fanlight was positioned above the door, and single windows were present in the ground floor left and right bays. Semicircular-headed windows were set within each upper floor gable. All front-facing openings were framed with stucco keystones, with all windows being modern replacements.
