Description
A thatched cottage, likely built between 1820 and 1839, stood on Bettys Hill Road in Ballyholland, near Newry. The building is first shown on an Ordnance Survey map from 1834, but was not included in the first Valuation around 1835, suggesting its value was below £5. According to a 1970 survey card, the cottage was a single-storey structure with rendered and plastered walls, modern windows, and a sheeted half-door. It had a thatched roof with masonry skews. A chimney was constructed of masonry on the left gable, and another between the central and right bays. A painting held by the current owner depicts the cottage as three bays wide and shows the thatched roof, masonry skews, and the two chimneys. The front elevation had a modern picture window to the left and right bays, and a similar window and a door to the central bay. The thatched cottage was demolished around 1979.
