9 Bettys Hill Road, Ballyholland Upper, Newry, Co Down, BT34 2LY

This is a single-story, three-bay vernacular house located on the west side of Bettys Hill Road, Ballyholland Upper, Newry. The construction date is estimated to be between 1800 and 1819.

The house is much altered and currently undergoing renovation, with the pitched roof removed and all windows and doors missing. The walls are rubble stone, cement-dashed and painted. The front (east-facing) elevation features three wide, modern window openings and a doorway set between the first and second windows from the left.

An Ordnance Survey map from 1834 shows a building at this location, though it was not included in the initial valuation records around 1835, suggesting a valuation less than £5 at that time. It is believed to be the same building as the current structure. A 1970 survey card described an earlier version of the house as a single-story cottage with harled walls and an asbestos slated roof. The windows were double-hung sashes divided into two panes by vertical glazing bars, and the gable end was rendered and returned to frame the front elevation. Window and door surrounds were finished with plain render. The building’s setting is alongside other properties on Bettys Hill Road.
