Description

This is a tapered brick chimney of square cross-section, likely built between 1860 and 1879. It stands within a Newry & Mourne District Council waste disposal site, formerly an amenity site, and is a prominent local landmark. The chimney is of relatively common design, precluding it from formal listing.

The structure features elongated semicircular inset panels on all four sides. It's corbelled at the top and coped with granite blocks, with pairs of blind semicircular-headed niches punctuating the corbelling. An infilled semicircular opening at the base, facing the road, served as a draught, and another opening lower down, previously a former boiler flue, has also been filled. Yellow brick was used for the arch heads and as stringing around the chimney at a consistent level. The chimney was consolidated by the council when the amenity site was established.

Not shown on an Ordnance Survey map from 1858, the chimney appears on a 1903 map, indicating a later 19th-century construction date. This 1903 map depicts a large rectangular building adjoining the chimney, likely related to Moor Quarry (HB 16/30/037). A 1939 map shows this building only in outline, suggesting it and the chimney were defunct by that time. The Irish Builder publication of 1876 mentions the installation of steam-driven polishing equipment by Messrs Hugh Campbell & Son, the quarry owners, with an engine and boiler supplied from the Soho Foundry in Newry and polishing equipment from an Aberdeen firm. It is probable the chimney was erected in connection with this machinery installation.
