Description

Moor Quarry is a large granite quarry located in the townland of Ballynacraig, near Newry, County Down. Dating from approximately 1840 to 1859, the quarry is the largest of several in the area and contributes to the surrounding landscape. The quarry face rises roughly 30 metres from the hillside, and the quarry floor has been partially filled in. It was first recorded on an Ordnance Survey map of 1859. Originally and currently used for rural industry, the site is accessed via a laneway from a Northern Ireland Minerals Development Company waste disposal site. The quarry is noted as derelict and possesses industrial archaeological interest.
