Description

This is a two-storey former coal shed, built around 1891 as part of the Newry gasworks. The gasworks were established in 1822 and acquired by the Newry Town Commissioners in 1879; coal-gas manufacture ceased in 1968, and the site was largely demolished in 1987. The building is situated on a slope, allowing access at ground and first floor levels.

The structure is constructed of granite rubble laid in courses, with a gabled roof. However, its original character has been significantly diminished by recent refurbishment. The main south-facing facade, overlooking the former gasworks yard, now features four large windows and two doors at ground level, and eight fixed, two-paned windows at first floor level, all of which are modern insertions. The window and door surrounds are rendered with cement. The north-facing gable has a large semicircular-headed opening at ground floor level, trimmed with brick and containing a modern four-pane window, and a modern door to its left. Above are two original window openings, now infilled with brick jambs, semicircular brick heads with granite keystones, and granite cills. Set into the gable apex is a dressed granite stone bearing the initials 'NTC' and the date '1891', referring to the Newry Town Commissioners. A former original door opening onto Chapel Street has been infilled, with three new doors inserted. The right gable is similar to the left, with first-floor infilled openings, but otherwise blank. The eaves and gables have been raised approximately 0.6 metres and the roof retiled, with a skylight inserted on the Chapel Street slope. The building was erected on the site of a demolished terrace of houses and was first recorded in 1892 as a 'new shed' measuring 33ft x 15ft x 18ft. The building possesses industrial archaeological interest.
