Description

This is a two-storey, L-shaped complex consisting of a house and shop, situated on the corner of Boat Street and Quay Street in Newry. The building was likely constructed between 1840 and 1859, appearing in records from 1863 and not shown on the 1835 Ordnance Survey map. It was originally a grocery shop, owned by Patrick Grant, according to an 1886 directory.

The building is roofed with natural slate, with gabled ends and a hipped corner. It features two cement-rendered brick chimneys, one on the corner and one on the Boat Street gable. Rainwater goods are made of metal, but are partly missing. The walls are of unpainted and lined cement render. The Quay Street frontage is canted, and incorporates an entrance to the shop, consisting of a pair of two-panel timber doors with a two-pane transom light above. A 2/2 sliding sash window is located directly above the door. To the left of this door is a large shop window with four fixed vertical panes, the end panes divided by a horizontal bar, and flanked by timber pilasters supporting a wooden fascia. To the left again is a coach arch containing two timber doors. Above the shop window and coach arch are matching 2/2 sliding sash windows. To the right of the main door, on the Boat Street frontage, is a shop window similar to the one on Quay Street, followed by a 6/6 sliding sash window. At first floor, three similar windows are present, with the central window aligned above the ground floor window.

A two-storey store, set at right angles to Boat Street, abuts the Boat Street gable and has a pitched natural slate roof. The gable elevation has a door and a small window in the apex. The section of the right cheek, closest to the street, is cement-rendered, while the rest is of random rubble granite. The store lacks rainwater goods. During a recent inspection, the roof had been covered with plastic sheeting and the windows boarded over.
