Description
This is one of a terrace of five identical, two-and-a-half storey, two-bay houses on the west side of Kilmorey Street in Newry. Part of a cohesive group of modest High Victorian houses, the terrace contributes significantly to the character of this part of the town. Construction likely occurred between 1860 and 1879 and the house was first noted in records in 1878, recorded as vacant and newly completed, becoming occupied the following year.
The house has a gabled natural slate roof and a distinctive ornate chimney at the right end of the roof apex, featuring three square-based flues joined by an oversailing cap. The walls are cement rendered over a projecting base course, with incised lines to the ground floor. A moulded cill course runs across the façade at the first floor window level. The eaves are deep and project, supported by four pairs of brackets, beneath which runs a leaded rainwater gutter. A narrow moulded string course connects the brackets at their bases. A gabled timber-framed dormer window rises from the eaves, with fretted bargeboards, a carved wooden finial, a 2/2 top-hung window with a circular vent above, and glazed cheeks.
The main entrance, at the left, features a stained timber door with four raised and fielded panels and a transom light, set within an ornate stucco surround, decorated with distinctive geometric panels in the jambs and an entablature with a raised panel embossed with the number ‘15’. To the right of the entrance is a 2/2 horizontally-divided sliding sash window with a painted cill. Two 2/2 vertically-divided windows are positioned at first floor, mirroring the ground floor openings. Ornate stucco architraves embellish the window openings, featuring rosettes in the middle of the jambs and keystoned heads. All windows and the door are modern replacements. The side gables are abutted by adjacent buildings. The rear walls are cement rendered, with a back door positioned at the right, alongside a window to the back room. Above this, two windows align with the ground floor openings; the one at the right illuminates the half landing between the ground and first floors. Attic stairs are lit by a skylight.
The building exhibits strong architectural interest due to its style, proportions, and ornamentation. While some alterations detract from the original character, the house retains considerable group value alongside the other buildings in the terrace and holds local historical interest.
