Description

This is a three-storey, two-bay house, one of a pair of mirror-image properties, dating from between 1820 and 1839. It has been significantly altered and modernised to resemble a late Victorian house. The building contributes to group value by being one of an identical pair.

The house features a gabled natural slate roof with a cement-rendered chimney shared with the neighbouring property at number 33. Cast-iron ogee gutters run along the roofline, with a plastic downpipe on the left side. The front elevation is cement-rendered over a projecting base course, with a moulded cill course to the first floor. Moulded string courses run across the facade, forming a hood mould over the windows. Each first floor window head is embellished with a shell motif, and a moulded cornice runs across the top of the elevation. The ground floor has a modern four-panel timber door with brass furniture, topped by a replacement five-pane transom light. The door is framed by rendered jambs with scrolled and foliated consoles supporting a projecting entablature. A two-over-two sliding sash window is situated on the left side of the ground floor, fitted with a moulded architrave and a decorative stucco keystone. First and second floors each have two two-over-two sliding sash windows, all with exposed window boxes; those at the top are reduced in height. All openings are aligned except for the door, which is set to the right. Visible sections of the gable wall are cement-rendered due to abutting buildings on both sides. Access to the rear of the property was not possible during assessment.

The building appears on the 1835 Ordnance Survey map and was valued similarly to number 33 in 1835. It was described as being 2.25 storeys high in the 1863 valuation. A significant increase in value from £15 to £22 during the 1907 valuation revision suggests a rebuild or major refurbishment took place around that time, resulting in the present three-storey structure.
