Lime kiln off Bryansford Rd, Hilltown, Newry, Co Down, BT34 5XQ

This lime kiln, situated on a north-facing slope near Hilltown, Newry, demonstrates the historical importance of lime as a fertilizer in the area. Likely dating from between 1820 and 1839, though possibly older, it was first noted on an Ordnance Survey map from 1919. The kiln is located on the edge of cultivated land, close to a small settlement within the townland of Stang.

The kiln itself features a 2-meter diameter pot that tapers inwards to an infilled base. It is lined with rounded granite field stones and faced with quarried rubble schist, reaching a maximum height of 2.5 meters. A short ramp leads up to the kiln. The lintel over the draw hole entrance has collapsed, along with part of the front wall; this opening is 80 centimeters wide and 135 centimeters high, sloping down and inwards to the draw hole. The kiln is currently recorded as derelict and is of industrial archaeological interest.
