Lime Kiln, Off Lisnacree Lane, Killowen Road, Kilkeel, Newry, Co Down, BT34

This is a lime kiln, likely dating from between 1820 and 1839, and of local interest due to its association with lime production for mortar and agricultural fertilizer. The kiln is located in a field on the west side of Lisnacree Lane, off the Killowen Road near Kilkeel. It is constructed of dry-built rounded granite fieldstones and features a single pot approximately 1.8 meters in diameter, now infilled. The structure has collapsed to the east and north, but remains 2.5 meters high at the south and west sides. A draw hole, surmounted by a large rounded granite lintel, faces north. Revetments composed of large rounded granite field boulders are positioned on either side of the draw hole. An earthen ramp on the east side may be the result of recent dumping. The kiln isn’t shown on any Ordnance Survey map, and is currently recorded as derelict, possessing industrial archaeological interest.
