Description

This is a granite milestone situated between numbers 356 and 384 Killowen Road, Kilkeel, Newry, County Down. It is one of approximately twenty of the original twenty-four milestones that survive along the road between Newry and Newcastle. It stands in a vegetated bank on the left side of the road when travelling towards Kilkeel and projects approximately 45 centimetres above ground level. The milestone is 30 centimetres square in cross-section. The figure "11" is incised in lettering 14 centimetres high on each of the three sides facing the road. Dating from the early 19th century, likely between 1800 and 1819, its use of Irish miles to denote distance from Newry supports this date. Although not shown on any Ordnance Survey map, the milestone is of industrial archaeological interest. The milestone is owned by the local government.
