Milestone, East of 262 Newry Road, Kilkeel, Newry, Co Down, BT34 4SD

This is a granite milestone dating from approximately 1820 to 1839. It is one of around twenty surviving milestones between Newry and Newcastle, out of an original total of twenty-four. Located on the left side of the 262 Newry Road, east of its junction with Mill Bay Road, the milestone stands in a vegetated bank. It is a finely-dressed granite post with a pyramidal top, projecting roughly 50cm above ground level and measuring 30cm square in cross-section. The number "12" is incised at a height of 15cm on each of its three faces directed towards the road. The milestone is not depicted on any Ordnance Survey map edition. The use of Irish miles in the measurement inscribed on the stone indicates its likely early 19th-century origin. It is of industrial archaeological interest.
