Description

The building is a former school, likely constructed between 1880 and 1890, and is currently used as farm buildings. It is a large, single-storey, one-bay structure positioned parallel to the south side of the Newry Road. The steeply pitched roof is covered in natural slate, with exposed rafter ends and half-round metal gutters. The walls are built of wet-dashed random rubble.

The north elevation, facing the road, features a large modern corrugated metal sliding door to the left of centre and another at the right end; it is unclear whether these replace original openings or are later additions. A plaque at the centre of the wall is inscribed "Erected by Very Rev. Richard Marner D.D.P.P.V.F. 1890". The left gable has a large 3x7 pane timber window with a semicircular head and granite cill. This, and all other windows, are set high in the wall, preventing occupants from easily looking out. A small circular vent is located in the apex of the gable. The right gable is identical to the left.

The south elevation is abutted to eaves level by an agricultural shed with a monopitched corrugated asbestos roof. A wide entrance opening, also at eaves level, is located on the left wall, and its original purpose is uncertain. To the right of the entrance are four window openings; two retain remains of timber sliding sash windows, one is now infilled, and all have granite cills. A random rubble wall forms the boundary to the road, with two low, square granite piers indicating the former position of gates, which have since been infilled. Part of the road-boundary wall has been demolished at its west end.

The school was first mentioned in valuation records in 1891. Reverend Marner, the parish priest, was also responsible for the construction of Attical Chapel (HB16/05/011), which opened in the same year. The school was superseded by an adjoining building in 1963 and closed in 1998.
