Description

This is a one-and-a-half storey, three-bay vernacular house built between 1820 and 1839, located on a lane off Glenloughan Road in Kilkeel. The house is situated on a slope, which results in the right gable being noticeably shorter than the left. The roof is pitched and covered with natural slate, incorporating terracotta ridge tiles and cement coped verges. There are three rendered brick chimneys – one at each gable and one positioned between the centre and right bays. Painted semicircular metal rainwater goods run along the roofline. The walls are lime rendered and whitewashed.

The main entrance is located on the right side of the left bay, leading into a slightly projecting gabled porch. The porch has a natural slate roof, raised terracotta ridge tiles, and plain timber bargeboards; its cheeks and walls are consistent with the rest of the building. There are three windows on the front facade: one to the left of the entrance and two to the right. These windows are 2/2 sliding sashes with exposed boxes, horns, and painted granite sills. Both the left and right gables are blank.

The rear elevation is largely abutted by a one-storey, monopitched extension, which is pebble-dashed and painted. An exposed section of the original house features a 2/2 sash window on the left and a three-paned (horizontal) metal window without cills on the right. The left cheek of the extension has a partly glazed modern door, while the rear wall has a 2x4 pane metal window. The right cheek of the extension has a window opening that has been covered with sheeting. Outhouses are situated at the rear of the property.

A building is depicted at this location on an Ordnance Survey map from 1834. It was not included in the 1838 Valuation records, suggesting a valuation of less than £5.
