Description
This is a single-storey, three-bay vernacular house located on the south side of Dunaval Road, Kilkeel, dating from around 1800 to 1819. The house is marked on an Ordnance Survey map from 1834. The principal, north-east facing façade overlooks the road. The roof is pitched and covered in natural slate, with terracotta ridges and brick verges. Three rendered chimneys are present—one to each gable and one on the party wall between the central and right bays. Rainwater goods are semicircular metal, fitted only to the front. The walls are lime-dashed random rubble with an ochre wash.
The entrance is located in a shallow gabled porch on the left side of the middle bay. The porch roof matches the main roof in terms of materials and detail, and incorporates a 1930s glazed and sheeted door, which is slightly taller than the eaves. A 1/1 sliding sash window is present on the ground floor of the left bay, while the central and right bays each have a 2/2 vertically divided sliding sash window. All windows have exposed boxes and painted granite cills. The left gable is blank and adjoins a small, lean-to addition constructed of concrete blocks with a corrugated metal roof; this lean-to incorporates an earlier random rubble wall, the pitched roof of which is visible as a mark on the main block’s gable. The rear elevation is lime-dashed and features a small 2/2 sliding sash window at the centre, with an infilled window to the right. The right gable is blank and abuts a small outbuilding with a pitched corrugated asbestos roof and rendered walls. Internally, the house has undergone significant alterations, including the installation of modern fireplaces and smooth-plastered walls, despite retaining much of its original external character.
